“I cannot thank you enough! If it wasn’t for you, my children would not have had presents to unwrap this year. I wish you could have seen their faces when they opened their gifts. As for me, I do not need anything, as long as my kids are happy that is my true gift." -Adopt A Family recipient from last year
What is our Adopt A Family program?
Adopt A Family provides a magical holiday for the families in our shelters (ACCESS York and Still Waters), our clients impacted by violence (served at the Victim Assistance Center), and those with children in our early learning center, Pre-K Counts and after school programs.
We have enough shoppers to match with our families! See you next year.
Getting involved with YWCA York's annual Adopt A Family program is a way for our community to bring true joy and meaning to the holiday season. You can purchase gifts for a family and choose the size and age ranges you are most comfortable with. Or you can make a donation and we'll do the shopping for you.
Holidays are an especially difficult time for our families, as parents feel pressure to create the best holiday experience possible for their children while struggling to meet basic family needs. Last year, our generous community adopted dozens of families connected to YWCA York and made their holidays truly special.
How does Adopt A Family work?
Take these steps:
- Complete a sponsorship form and you'll receive a personal profile on the family that you are matched with, as well as their holiday wish list, by Wednesday, November 22nd.
- Purchase gifts for your family. You decide how much you'd like to spend.
- Pull up curbside and drop off your wrapped gifts in the main lobby at 96 S. George Street in Downtown York on the dates below. You'll receive a thank you letter from your family.
PLEASE NOTE that YWCA York adheres to strict confidentiality guidelines, so we do not permit Adopt A Family donors to present gifts to their adopted families in person. Gifts will be distributed on your behalf to our families by the women of YWCA York's Junior Board.
How can you help?
You, your family, or your co-workers can choose to:
Who are you helping?
Your generosity provides affirmation to our families that they are not alone and that people in our community care about them and their children. Those who sign up to receive holiday assistance are clients using our domestic violence and sexual assault services. Many domestic violence victims have been forced to flee their homes to the safety of our shelters. All of these families are on the road to self-sufficiency and are receiving assistance with housing, counseling, child care and other services. We also provide a wonderful holiday experience for low-income families enrolled in our childcare or after school programs.
