York County Library System Delivers Magic to YWCA York Child Care Program
York, PA, January 13, 2010 — YWCA York and the York County Library System have teamed up to teach preschool children about local libraries and all they have to offer. “Delivering the Magic of York County Libraries” is a new program offered by the Library System, and YWCA York is the first organization in the county to participate. One of the featured parts of the program is a biweekly story time, where a children’s librarian comes to the organization to read to students. January 11th was the first story time, and it was a big hit.
Paula Gilbert, children’s librarian at Martin Library, read three stories to four classes of YWCA York’s Pre-K Counts classes. Gilbert incorporated interactive songs and poems in between stories and engaged students by asking questions about the stories. She also brought a stuffed penguin, polar bear and snowman to go along with her winter-themed stories.
“The kids loved the program…they can’t wait for the next story time,” said Ashley Zurawski, a Pre-K Counts teacher. “One student told me that she loved Miss Paula and wanted her to come back.”
That student will get her wish. The next story time is scheduled for Monday, January 25 from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. The story times take place every other week through May.
Pre-K Counts is a free part-time or full-time pre-kindergarten program subsidized by the State. In keeping with education standards for Pre-K Counts, YWCA York brought the Library System in to provide additional learning and literacy opportunities to the children.
